My name is Leigh. I am a copyeditor, proofreader, and the proprietor of The Book Owl. Books have always been a love of mine for as long as I can remember. In school, I excelled in English and Literature classes. In college, it made sense to pursue a degree in Literature. I didn't become an editor until many years later when I decided to build my own business. I thought of the name "The Book Owl" because of my love for books and how the owl is a sign of wisdom.

Self-publishing doesn't provide the same safety measures that traditional publishing does. Authors have to risk more for their own success. They may end up hiring more than one editor if their manuscript needs it. Copyeditors may seem like glorified proofreaders, yet they're anything but that. Depending on the level of copyediting, they will catch anything missed by previous editors, check your facts should your manuscript need it, query plot holes or confusion which may still exist--the list can go on. Proofreaders are your last defense to catch any typos or missing punctuation that may have slipped through the cracks.
